Workshop Description:

Each day of my weekend workshops this Fall will have a similar structure, yet each class will have different information. In every workshop class, I will be emphasizing the fundamentals of the way that I practice hatha yoga as a path of spiritual unfoldment through positive mind-body discipline, technical postural alignment, and creative play.

Each of my weekend workshops for the rest of 2012 will contain classes on a postural sequence called, “The Roots,” which is designed to help tune the mind-body for any level of yoga student. Through The Roots practice I will present key focuses for the mind and the postural alignments within that amazing sequence. I will show that there are universal alignments and actions that can be applied to each pose which will open up the shoulders and hips specifically. All the poses are performed using universal principles of alignment, which help to avoid injuries and to make the poses particularly therapeutic and transformative. Also, the fundamentals of alignment technique, which are universally applied to all poses, will tremendously advance any student’s knowledge of not only of hatha yoga, but of basic postural alignment in life.

The 55 base poses of the Roots are accessible by everyone from teenagers to 80-year olds, while 56 additional advanced poses will fully challenge all experienced and expert practitioners within a 2-hour workshop class. All the poses have stages and modifications so anyone can do The Roots practice, which is a well-rounded practice that includes some hand-balances, fundamental thigh stretches, backbends, some basic abdominal exercises, sitting forward bends, hip-openers, and twists.

The Basics Level classes will explore the most elementary aspects of the 55 base poses of The Roots sequence. At the same time, students can expect to be challenged to their ability. Everyone will be asked to focus and squeeze their mind-body to their core and mid-line, so inevitably students will sweat as they focus intensely on balancing in the poses. However, I will not be requiring great flexibility with the poses, so it will be within everyone’s capacity. It will be demanding for many students, yet each morning session will be very transformative and empowering.

The Intermediate/Advanced Level classes and Advanced Teachers Practice will be an opportunity to delve into the 56 advanced variations, which branch off of the 55 base poses, making a complete routine of 111 possible different poses, including 14 advanced one-legged standing poses and 12 hand-balancings plus 6 handstand postures. The full Roots practice challenges the full range of the body’s back bending, forward bending, and side bending capacity. The intensity of any of the Roots poses, held for 30 or 60 seconds per side with short one-second intervals between poses, helps to cultivate a sharp, clear mind and a powerfully vibrant body with regular practice.

With each day of the workshop, students will go deeper into The Roots sequence with more detail and sophistication, learning how to customize it and advance their own practice. Due to its diversity, ‘The Roots’ can be enjoyed by beginners and also challenge the most advanced practitioners.

Every weekend workshop will also incorporate pranayama and meditation for a well-rounded weekend of yoga practice.
